School Starts Later, No Advantages

For many years, students around the world keep whining to their friends and teachers about how tired they are for not getting enough sleep at night. Last week there was a daily poll on the topic of starting classes later. The number of students that agreed with the poll was higher than the students who voted against by 4%. But people should have voted against it more because there are some reasons that people should be considering. The school day started later than usual; there would be problems at the workplace, winter, and safety issues. People can follow the current schedule and those who say they cannot, they are just being lazy.

The school boards should already know that there are students that have part-time jobs and if the school was finished later then the chance for those students coming to work late is very high. Those students will likely get fired if they come to work habitually late and nobody wants that to happen. That also applies in every full-time work place. Even if they are not late for work, the students still need to eat something first before coming to work for a better working result and a late finish would not allow time to eat.

Another problem is winter and safety. Students come to school later and go home much later. This makes no different if you start early and finish early, especially in the winter, if school finishes at 4:30 PM. It would be very dark and it is very dangerous for those students who walk home alone. For example, students might get robbed or get hit by a car because is it dark outside.

The main point is this, everybody can get used to the schedule as it is now and the only reason for lateness is that they are just being lazy. Some people will always be the way they are. Like when a person goes to school at 9:00 AM, and he usually goes to bed at 12:00 AM. Even though if school starts at 10: 00 AM, he will still go to bed at exactly 12:00 AM like the night before. So there is no point of applying a later start. If someone does not get enough sleep, he or she should consider taking a nap after school at their house instead of playing video games, etc...

So the idea of applying a later start would be the worst idea ever to be implemented. Students need not be lazy and should get used to the school hours. So later on when they go to work, they won’t feel tired or lazy all the time because they had done all this at school already. Students who agreed with the poll should think again what the consequences would be if school starts later. Those students should not be wasting too much time on non-school related activities. If they follow that rule, then they will feel that school does not have to start later because they already did the important things and they get more time for sleep.
